We've tried to answer some of your most common questions here, but please don't hesitate to get in touch if anything is unclear or you need more help!

 

VAT, CUSTOMS & EXPORTS

 

Is VAT included in your prices?

UK VAT is included in our prices.  

For all other countries VAT is not charged and the price will be reduced when you go through the checkout and put in your delivery address.

However, VAT, duties or customs charges may be applied locally - please check for your country before ordering. 

 

Exports & extra charges due to the UK leaving the EU

The UK left the EU with a trade deal which allows trade between the UK and the EU without tariffs or quotas. However, local taxes and charges can sometimes be applied locally to you, and will differ in each country. 

As it is very hard for us to understand so many different international taxes and laws we ask you to make your own enquiries and ensure you are happy with any extra costs that might be charged in your country before ordering.

Please check any local charges in your area before ordering as we can't be held responsible for any charges applied after shipping.  This is stated on the cart page also.

If you don’t check the local charges or they are more than expected and you don't want to pay them you can refuse the charges and the shipment will be returned to us.  Once we have received it back in the same condition we can refund your order less any costs we incur through DHL for its return. 

  

European customers & EORI

For business customers in Europe we now need your EORI number please so there aren't any delays at customs.  You can enter this in the notes box at checkout or email us at hello@blackvelvetstyling.com

Failure to supply this information could lead to delays and extra charges out of our control.

 

Can I get a VAT Invoice? 

You can download a PDF of your VAT receipt/invoice for each order in your account section. There will also be a printed copy in your parcel.

SHIPPING

 

There's no shipping option for my country?

This will probably be because you are trying to get kit items shipped internationally?  I'm afraid we can no longer send these items overseas. 

If you remove them from your cart and update it you will get the shipping options for our backdrops to your country.

 

Where's my order/how can I track my order?

All special delivery methods with Royal Mail and DHL are trackable via your account area clicking on the order number then clicking the tracking number link which will take you to the shipment providers website.  This information is also emailed with your dispatch confirmation and linked via that email.

Royal Mail first and second class services don't provide any tracking but we do get proof of postage and delivery confirmation. 

If your item appears to be lost please contact us and we will do our best to help.  In the rare instance that a parcel is lost we will seek compensation before sending a replacement.

BACKDROP DESIGNS, SIZES & CUSTOM ORDERS 

 

What are the sizes of your photo backdrops?

Our printed backgrounds come in two standard sizes (they may vary very slightly due to cutting tolerances)

A1 - 594 x 841 mm or 23.4 x 33.1 inches

A0 - 841 x 1189 mm or 33.1 x 46.8 inches

 

Can I have an A1 backdrop made larger?

Everything we have in the standard A1 size can be made in the larger A0 size by request. 

It usually takes 1-3 working days for us to create the file and get new backdrops ready for dispatch. (We never scale up for larger sizes - a new file will be created by our graphic designer to keep all the same details and quality over a larger surface area.) 

 

Do you do custom backdrop designs?

We're not really set up for this as we don't print in house but we are always open to ideas, especially tweaking our designs for you.  Please contact us with your references and need-by date and we will let you know if we can help. Again this is usually a 1-3 working day turnaround.

 

What is the biggest backdrop you do?

Our biggest ready-made backdrop is A0 so approximately 120 x 89cm. We can create larger custom backdrops in around 1-3 working days - max width 150cm x 2m+ long.

 

My backdrop looks different to the image?

Items may vary in colour slightly to how you see them on screen – we try to give as much visual information about our designs as possible by photographing them with and without props and in close detail. 

Unfortunately all screen colours will differ, as always we are happy to refund items returned to us for any reason. (See returns info below)

We recommend following our account on Instagram @blackvelvetstyling and also searching the hashtag #bvsbackdrops to see our backdrops in different lighting and edited in various ways by our talented customers.  This will show you the versatility of the designs but also how they shoot and are read by the camera.

 

MATERIALS

 

Sustainable paper backdrops

We print in super high resolution on thick, 250gsm matt paper for a print that gives the best quality & detail.  (Paper is by design the best material to print on and in our opinion creates the sharpest image).

Our new paper stock is thicker and easier to mount but slightly less water resistant than the previous stock (hence the price drop!). 

The water resistance is created by the layer of ink protecting the matt paper beneath – so the darker the design (the more ink there is on the paper) the more durable it will be.

We are currently reviewing our mounting instructions but I think it’s safe to say these paper backdrops are very easy to adhere to card and MDF board with Display Mount and after 24 hours can be sealed with a matt water-based varnish if you wish to waterproof them.

Our paper backdrops are by no means a lesser product – they offer a different solution at a more affordable price.  For our first (very successful!) two and a half years in business this is the only material we offered and there are over 160 five star google reviews for our paper backdrops to date.

If sustainability is important to you, if you want to explore different ideas and experiment with your backdrop collection, if you have a small budget or if you want to buy in props for clients and then get rid of them with a low environmental impact - paper backdrops are perfect!

Plus you can make them last a long long time by mounting them.  We think they offer excellent value.

 

Vinyl backdrops

Our extra thick vinyl backdrops are double the thickness and strength of most other vinyl backdrops.  They are flexible but spring open on being unpacked and lay flat instantly for immediate use. (We have tested this by leaving them in the parcel tube for 3 days and they came out almost perfectly flat.)

The material we use is 400mic thick and up to 60% recycled, and we will keep looking and pestering for a higher % of recycled material that we can offer at a viable retail price.

Our vinyl backdrops are fully waterproof but they aren’t indestructible – please be careful not to crease them as like with any plastic, it will cause the shape to change permanently.

We made the decision to introduce vinyl backdrops in March 2021 due to the change in our paper stock (down to paper shortages during C-19) and because we know what works now and can order our stock in smaller quantities across our large range - reducing the risk of manufacturing unsustainable products that nobody wants.

We're very excited to offer our award-winning designs in a fully waterproof option!

 

Please note: the same design will look slightly different on the different materials – we have tried to show this in the product images.  If you need two or more backdrops the same we recommend buying them in the same material.

CARE & STORAGE

 

How should I care for my photography backdrops?

Please unwrap your backdrops as soon as possible to help them flatten out.

Paper backdrops will have a slight curve to them after being rolled to ship which will need some time to relax. Lie them face down with a book or two on top to speed this up.

You will notice how thick and strong our vinyl backdrops are; they will spring open and lay flat more quickly if not immediately.

All backdrops should be wiped clean with a damp cloth only. Chemicals and abrasives could scratch and damage the print.

Please don’t put anything hot on your backdrops as this could mark them or make them ripple.

Strong-coloured food and drinks (turmeric, beetroot, coffee etc) could stain our backdrops; please use them with caution.

Store your backdrops completely dry, flat and away from direct sunlight in an ambient room.  Our ‘carry & store’ backdrop cases are ideal.

All of our backdrops can be widely recycled in the UK.

  

Are your backdrops waterproof?

Our paper backdrops are water resistant depending on the amount of ink in the design, please read above about our sustainable paper backdrops.

Our vinyl backdrops are fully waterproof but should be wiped clean and put away dry after use.

 

DAMAGES & RETURNS

 

What if my order arrives damaged?

We do our best to pack and protect everything so it arrives as it left, but if any part of your order arrives damaged please let us know straight away by email with photographs and we will seek compensation and/or arrange a replacement.

 

How do I return something?

We hope that you will enjoy using your new backdrops, but if you aren't satisfied with your purchase or need to return it for any reason, you can return the product in its original packaging in perfect, unused condition within 30 days of purchase to get a full refund on your items. 

Please download and print a returns form for your order from your account section.

You will find instructions for packaging your parcel on the returns form and below - please read this carefully to ensure the products arrive back to us safely and in good condition to receive a refund.

We must be in receipt of your returned items within 30 days of the purchase date. 

As a small business return postal costs to return items can't be refunded sorry. We recommend using a tracked or signed service and getting proof of postage.

Once your return has been received we will notify you of the acceptance of the items. Refunds are processed via the original payment method within 7 days. 

 

Packaging your returns 

Please roll all items carefully and secure in the original tissue paper to stop them expanding in the tube.

If the parcel tube has plastic end caps both end caps must be in place and secured with tape. This is very important as without tape they can get caught on other mail and come off leaving the contents free to fall out.

If the tube is plastic free please ensure the tissue paper covers the ends of the product so that you can tape over the tucked ends of the tube without sticking to the contents.

 

Can I exchange something?

Unfortunately our website can't facilitate exchanges. The best way to exchange something is to return your item and add a note that it is for exchange.

If you need to speed things up you may be best to order again before waiting for us to exchange an item.
